From curriculum-linked learning to enrichment days and residential programmes, Dorset offers outdoor education opportunities that support students’ physical, social and personal development while encouraging a connection with the environment.
Why is Outdoor Education Important for Schools?

Outdoor education plays a vital role in supporting our young people’s development. Learning outside the classroom allows students to experience challenges, build confidence and develop practical life skills in a supportive, but challenging environment.
Benefits of outdoor education for schools include:
-
Improved physical health and wellbeing
-
Increased confidence and independence
-
Development of teamwork and communication skills
-
Better student relationships
-
Strong links to subjects such as geography, science and PE
Well-structured outdoor education also helps students learn how to manage risk safely, rather then just avoid it all together, an important skill both in education and later life.
Why Dorset Is Ideal for Outdoor Education
Dorset is ideal for outdoor education thanks to its incredible, varied landscapes. The area
offers coastal, rural and inland environments, all within short travelling distances, making it practical for day trips as well as longer programmes.

Properly risk assessed
-
Delivered by suitably qualified instructors
-
Supported by clear safety and emergency procedures
-
Matched to the age, ability and experience of students
Working with experienced outdoor education providers can help schools meet their duty of care while delivering high-quality learning experiences.
How do we know a provider is up to standard?
This is something we find ourselves discussing with teachers regularly. It seems that many teachers that are planning school activities simply haven't heard of the various badges and awards they can look for to know a provider can be trusted!
What to look for:
-
AALA Licence - This is the big one! This is a licence issued by the HSE that all providers need if they are going to be delivering certain activities to under 18s. This involves a full audit of documents, safety systems and management of activities.
-
LOtC Quality Badge - This is a award providers choose to attain and any company with this quality badge has been independently inspected and checked, with a focus on their educational delivery.
-
Adventuremark - This is another award providers choose to attain. This is designed to inspect providers to the same standard as a AALA inspection, regardless of if the activities they offer are within scope of a AALA Licence.
-
AHOEC - This is a membership organisation that shares best practice.
-
BAPA - This is a membership organisation that shares best practice and also audits the safety systems in place at a particular provider.
- NCC - This is the National organisation that provides the guidance and advice Coasteering Providers should be following, across the country.
There are so many different badges out there! But the key ones to remember are: AALA, LOtC and the NCC. An AALA Licence is a LEGAL requirement for providers of certain activities, so that is really worth looking for!
