Our RLSS National Water Safety Management Programme (NWSMP) courses, give candidates the confidence and skills to manage water-based risks in an aquatic environment. Training can be tailored to the context and environments you operate in, whether on beaches, rivers, lakes, or pools, making it directly relevant to your day-to-day activities and ensuring you are prepared to keep yourself and others safe around water.
Ideal for outdoor instructors, teachers, construction workers, environment services workers and individuals alike, these courses may be aimed at people who work in and around these aquatic environments, but they are also a great learning experience for anyone who spends their time in and around the water.
Learn real world skills. Keep your self safe. Keep others safe... Maybe even save a life!

What is the National Water Safety Management Programme (NWSMP)?
The National Water Safety Management Programme (NWSMP) equips anyone working in, on or near water, with essential knowledge and skills to make informed decisions about managing water safety. Accredited by the Institute of Outdoor Learning, the programme meets the learning outcomes of DEFRA's modules 1 and 2 for Water Safety.
The NWSMP awards are for employers and candidates from a wide range of industries, including teaching (field trips), construction, environmental health, leisure/outdoor and emergency services that are required to operate safely in or near water.
The NWSMP is split into two levels per module to ensure candidates get the most out of the course. The modules
available to complete are:
Water Safety Awareness - for those working near water as
part of a structured activity.
Inland Waterways - for those working in-water with a focus specifically on inland waterway hazards.
Coastal Waterways - for those working in-water with a focus specifically on coastal waterway hazards specifically.
NWSMP Water Safety Awareness Course
The NWSMP Water Safety Awareness Course is built for those working near water as part of a structured activity, however, this course also works brilliantly as CPD for anyone working in a aquatic environment or generally as part of a programme of water safety training.
This course covers:
- Generic Open Water Hazards
- Risk Management
- Land-based Rescue Techniques
- PPE & Aquatic Clothing
- Basic Life Support Awareness
Want to step it up?
Although this award is focused on land based rescues, we can offer to bolt on a more active, water based rescue session, to build on the skills of this course, without having to complete a full module 2 course.
£105.00pp (incl VAT @ 20%)
NWSMP Inland & Coastal (Module 2)
The NWSMP Module 2 courses are designed to build on the knowledge from Water Safety Awareness and start to develop practical, in water rescue skills. You'll practice using throwlines, moving through water and performing rescues involving entering the water. These courses are designed for people who intend on entering the water, but just as well act as a great bit of learning for anyone who regularly visits aquatic environments and wants to learn to keep themselves and other safe!
Both module 2 courses cover:
- Environment Specific Hazards
- In Water Rescue Skills
- Personal Safety
- Dynamic Risk Management
(Plus additional skills specific to each environment, such as moving through shallow water and dealing with surf and swell.)
Don't want to do both?
That's fine! You can choose to just complete the Inland or Coastal modules on their own.
£250.00pp (incl VAT @ 20%)
Why should we do the training with Jurassic Watersports?
Choosing the right provider for any training course can be tricky. There are many providers out there offering the same courses, so it can be hard to find the 'right one'.
So what does make a difference?
The Trainers! If the courses are all the same, what really matters is the trainer, their approach, their style, their background and how they deliver.
Our Trainers:
Our Trainers are all experienced Outdoor Instructors who have worked in the aquatic environment for years. The background of our training team includes working as Outdoor Instructors, White Water Kayakers. Rescue Divers, and Active Coastguard Rescue Officers.
All of our Trainers are passionate about what they do and work hard to tailor all training and delivery styles to you, your group and what they need. We can tailor all courses to the context of your work, working beyond the scope of certain awards if you need something more 'out of the box'.
